It is known for its moisturizing, healing and protective properties. Seed oils (e.g. Shea Butter, cocoa butter, etc,) have two important fractions: the saponifiable fraction and the unsaponifiable fraction. Seed oil's healing properties are mostly contained in the unsaponifiable fraction while the saponifiable fraction contains most of the moisturizing qualities. Shea Butter contains an exceptionally large healing fraction (3 - 12% compared to 1% for other oils). The nuts are then accumulated, heated (boiled or oven-roasted) then dried. Dry kernels are ground into small pieces ("maceration") and then ground in a mill. Oil is extracted using one of three methods - traditional, cold press or chemical. Once extracted, the oil is heated in order to separate the stearin (solid fat/butter) from the olein (liquid oil).
